Indigenous Holocaust DenialSwedish TV, which declined to air the award-winning documentary, Spirits for Sale, is now instead repeatedly airing the film Historiens fångar ("Prisoners of the Past"), a propaganda piece consisting of an hour of relentless paternalism, offensive stereotypes, and racism both subtle and blatant. The central premise of this ugly, inconsistent piece of work is that indigenous people are having social and economic problems only because they are "stuck in the past", their cultures are "dead", and the only way to fix all these problems would be to abandon all traditional ways and adopt the cultures of their white oppressors. Curiously, the oppressors are never named as oppressors, even though they are the voices that guide and contextualize the film. Yes, they actually hired known White Supremacists to provide commentary, with one of them even posing as an American Indian. (more on this later.)The film actually proposes that traditional cultures and traditional peoples are the cause of suffering in indigenous communities. Not colonialism or racism, traditionals. No traditional people speak in the film. (And the filmmakers are also clueless about who is and isn't traditional. At one point they seem to be implying that casino magnates are the traditionals. Or something. Like I said, they're confused.)The actual Indigenous people who speak in the film (Australian Aboriginal, Inuit, Cheyenne, and Sami individuals) are basically there only to tell of the difficult or abusive periods and situations in their lives, especially when these involved conflicts with other Native people. But then their experiences are taken out of context and their stories exploited to serve the racist aims of the producers. The only positive things that are ever said about indigenous people in the film are when an indigenous person has assimilated into mainstream, white culture. Even the Sami people, who are portrayed in the more positive light, are outraged about the misrepresentations and white supremacist agenda in the film. One of the reasons we are concerned about this film is that it was made for an international audience, and there is reason to believe they may soon be trying to sell it to an American market, if they aren't already. We are currently seeking litigation to have this fraud Al Carroll taken off the Fulbright list which he defrauded by falsley stating he is Apache. Al Carroll has yet to ante up any evidence that he is in fact Native American at all. The Fulbright people have been put on notice as to Carroll's fraudulent and criminal activities.

It has been reported that Mr. Carroll has traveled to Indonesia to pursue his well-known pedophilia. The Govt. of Indonesia has been warned of Carroll's perverse sexual crimes against the children who he is molesting under the guise of a sick teacher/student relationship.

Last year Dr. Al Carroll gave several very well received talks here in the UK. Dr. Carroll is a historian teaching at St. Phillip's College in San Antonio, Texas. He is a Mescalero Apache mixed-blood and will be visiting the UK again later this year on his way to mainland Europe. He is expected to be in this country for around three days in May and hopes to be able to give one or two presentations.
It's hard to find good sources of information about Native American spirituality: books and the Internet may not always be reliable. Dr Carroll will speak about the history and traditions of Native American cultures and especially about his own Apache people.
If anyone could help with arrangements, finding venues, publicity, etc. we'd like to hear from you.

Notice to NAFPS Forum Members:In response to my having challenged this site's authority to sit in judgment on me, I have been subjected to a very nasty cocktail of abuse by some of the forum's members. That cocktail was made up of a combination of ignorance, fear, hatred, sexism, racism, ageism, and misogyny, as well as other forms of abuse . The horrible deaths of two of my family members was used as part of an attack on me, and my own physical and psychological suffering during my initiation experience were discounted. Even my generosity in making time to respond to your tirades while simultaneously dealing with very ill family members was perceived in a twisted way and thrown back at me with a lack of compassion that I can only describe as grotesque. So here's how it's now going to be:I will no longer communicate with any forum members whose only interest is in trying to discredit, malign or hurt me. I am very sorry that your personal and cultural history has been such a source of pain and suffering for you. I did not personally cause it. When I discovered that they had listed The Standing Bear under their "Fraud" section, I went onto the site to check it out, registered to participate in the open forum, and challenged their right to sit in judgment on me. The result of my standing up to these bullies was that a very nasty online brawl ensued (I believe that to date there have been some 1800 responses to my having challenged these people on their forum). During the course of this brawl, I was attacked on a personal level as well as on a professional level by various members on the site. When I attempted to have a reasonable private discussion about my work with the site's owner, Alton Carroll, a history professor from Boerne, Texas who claims Mescalero Apache, Mexican and Irish heritage, I was subjected to a particularly nasty version of what I quickly recognized as classic intellectual and psychological abuse. His tactics were those commonly used by all abusive patriarchal males as well as by cult leaders attempting to gain control over others. When I could not teach him to use common courtesy and respect for his elders when speaking to me, I ended my communication with him. As a result of my experience with Mr. Carroll and with certain other members of the NAFPS site, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that NAFPS is a cult-like hate group masquerading as a guardian of Native American culture and spirituality. Some people have advised me to ignore this attack, but I'm of the opinion that hate groups should be challenged whenever they rear their ugly heads. I'm also of the opinion that the discussion I attempted to have with them on their forum is long overdue and much needed.Therefore, I am going to continue to deal with the fallout from my having challenged NAFPS here on my site, by posting my own commentary on the issues at hand, as well as commentary from my students and others whose intent is to heal such cultural misunderstandings. The only rules for participating are that your comments must be intended to heal; that you do your best to try and understand the views of culturally different people; and that you address and/or respond to them in a respectful and thoughtful way. Internet anonymity has provided a few cyber-cowards with a high-tech equivalent of a public bathroom wall. They can give vent to their frustrations with little fear of detection and the courts may well protect them.
